Moorea & Patch: An Intimate Horse Photoshoot in Tasman
Some connections shape us for a lifetime, and for Moorea, that connection has four legs, a soft muzzle, and the kindest eyes. This intimate horse photoshoot in Tasman was all about honouring the bond between Moorea and her beloved horse, Patch, who she has had by her side for nearly 20 years.
Moorea has grown up with Patch. From the age of 10, he has been her constant, a companion through childhood, teenage years, and into adulthood. Now living away from Nelson, Moorea doesn’t get to see Patch as often as she once did. With Patch slowing down as he enters his older years, this session felt deeply important: a chance to preserve their connection through photographs she can cherish forever.
We met on a hot, sunny Friday afternoon in summer, in the paddock where Patch lives in a remote Tasman location. Rather than forcing anything staged or unnatural, this equine photography session focused on the rhythm of a typical afternoon together: bringing Patch in from the paddock, brushing him, walking slowly side by side, sharing cuddles, and, of course, treats.
The vibe was intimate, nostalgic, and quietly joyful. Patch is a character! At 26 he’s a slightly grumpy old man at times and there were moments where he made it very clear he wasn’t interested in playing ball unless snacks were involved. Those little quirks are part of who he is, and capturing them honestly is what makes sessions like this so meaningful!
Some of the most beautiful moments came during grooming. Patch’s eyes softened as Moorea brushed him - pure contentment - and there were countless gentle head touches, laughter, and affectionate moments between them. These are the in-between moments that matter most. The ones that don’t feel dramatic in the moment, but become priceless over time.
Moorea left the session feeling emotional, grateful, and deeply happy that she finally made it happen after thinking about it for so long. This women and horse photography session wasn’t about perfection. It was about presence, connection, and preserving a chapter of life that deserves to be remembered.
If you’ve ever loved someone - human or otherwise - and felt time quietly moving forward, documenting your connection can be one of the most powerful gifts you give yourself. Not because it’s the end of something, but because it honours what already is.
